Hyperacidity is a concern that bothers many. The reason of this being very common these days is the poor diet and extensive use of alcohol and smoking cigarettes.
If you are fond of foods like onions, fried foods, spicy foods, citrus fruits, caffeine drinks, tomatoes, garlic, chocolate, alcohol, tea and coffee then you might face acidity. Acidity is not an extreme condition. Having acidity once in a while is simply alright as this would be triggered by some or any of the acid contributing foods mentioned above. However, if the acidity persists and is chronic in nature then it is called the hyperacidity. These needs to be fixed or else this could lead to serious medical conditions like Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease; Helicobacter Pylori; Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome; Hypercalcemia and Gallstones.
The other way of understanding the cause of hyperacidity is from its literal meaning. The word” hyperacidity” means excessive secretion of acid. In our digestive system, the stomach plays a vital role. It has various acids that help digesting food. These acids are no doubt indispensable for the body, but these turn dangerous when these leave the stomach and gets to the esophagus. The weak LES valves are responsible for this escape. Hyperacidity could be triggered by this condition or an acute acidity might lead to this condition and by the end of all the result being hyperacidity.
The other causes of hyperacidity could be –
*gastric irritation caused by medication
*Indigestion of food
*Increased stress level
Whatever is the cause of hyperacidity, it needs to be fixed. The acute acidity could be taken care of by off the shelf medication. However, for hyperacidity, the best is to consult the doctor. After the consultation, you could decide about the herbal, ayurvedic, clinical or home remedies for hyperacidity. The consultation would highlight the underlying cause of hyperacidity and the same would help you chose the treatment as well.

Food is fuel for the body and we have a mechanism with which this food (fuel) is converted from its original form in which we consume it, to energy, which is then passed on to each cell in out body. The mechanism, which enables this process in a continuous fashion, is called the digestive system.
Stomach is the vital organ when we speak of the digestive system. The digestive system starts when we put something in our mouth and start to chew. Chewing is the first step of digestion. The mouth using the teeth would break food down in small particles; this would make it easier for the stomach to digest it. Once the food is chewed it travels from the mouth to the throat and then to the stomach by the esophagus. As the stomach receives this chewed food, it starts to digest it. For that, the stomach lining produces acids, which liquidly the food, as only then this chewed food could further been digested. This is the smooth sail and that is how it should be.
The problem arises when the stomach produces acid more than that is required. This is when the stomach acidity is felt by people. This is not an extreme condition if it occurs once in a while. However, if it is persistent then it should ring a bell. As this might be an invitation to other diseases like Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease; Helicobacter Pylori; Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome; Hypercalcemia and Gallstones.
You should be consulting your doctor before you take any off the shelf medicine for the situation. In case the stomach acidity is acute i.e. it is not persistent or frequent, off the shelf medicines could be helpful. However, in case of stomach hyperacidity these should not be attempted. The doctor should be consulted for the medication and advice.
